Atheros AR928X / NE-771 stuck in G mode – A Fix
A few posts back, I mentioned that Net4Switch had stuck my Atheros AR928X aka AzureWave NE-771 into G mode at 54mbps, rather than its native N mode at 300mbps.
I finally found a solution to getting it back up to 300, so I’d share it seeing as I found no conclusive solution that works elsewhere.
Here’s how to set the ar928x to 300mbps.
WLAN mini card module: AW-NE771
Model: AR5B91 || FCC ID: FCC-AR5B91
I haven’t tested if it works on any other make/model (namely because I have no other system with the same card). I take no liability if it doesn’t work for you, destroys your system somehow, or causes the universe to implode.
Basically, attempt this solution at your own risk.
Okay, now that that’s out the way…we begin
First, make your way over to Asus Support. From the General Download section on the right, select your product. For me, it came under Notebooks > X59 > X59GL. Yours may be different. If you have the same card, but not an Asus, either use the X59 path I mentioned, or skip to below the screenshot.
It’ll prompt you for your Operating System – select it. Open the section for “Wireless”. You’ll see something like this:

Use one of the download links from the Asus site to get a zip file. Now I don’t know about your download speeds, but I was only getting 30kB/s at most (I averaged around 11kB/s), and that’s on a 20Mb fibre connection, so I’ve re-hosted the zip file. For those of you who are impatient (like me!) or those who are just joining at this point, the links are below:

Once you’ve downloaded it, you’ll have 4 folders in the zip. They are: Install_CD, ndis5x, ndis5×64 and ndis6x. Extract them all to the same location, then browse to the folder called Install_CD. Run the setup executable shown below

The program is called Atheros Client Installation Program.
You should be prompted with a screen telling you a previous version exists, and asked if you want to remove the existing version or update it. Choose to remove it.
If you do not get this screen, uninstall the device drivers for the wireless adapter (make sure you have a backup!!), then run the installation again.
Using the application uninstall will remove the drivers, so no worries there. Make sure you have a copy of your wireless key though, as you’ll need it again when it comes to reconnecting.
Once it’s uninstalled, run the setup again and follow the onscreen instructions to install it. At one point, it will ask you to connect your wireless adapter – switch it back on (laptop) or plug it back in.
Reboot, and reconnect to your network. You should find that it’s back at 300mbps.
